The Story Behind Our Most Popular Bedspread

Did you know that the first Star bedspread was developed in 1999?

The stars on subsequent versions have never changed since. In fact, CEO, founder and creative director Kristina Lindhe said the story behind the creation of the stars is one she still remembers fondly.

"Krister Appelfeldt, an art director we worked with at the time, and I were in Portugal visiting suppliers. We sat in one of our current suppliers’ showrooms and looked at lots of bedspread samples hanging there," Kristina recalls. "We immediately felt like we wanted something that is more unique. That’s when the idea of a bedspread with stars was born. We sketched the stars on a piece of paper with the technician from the factory to get it just right," Kristina said.

The two were holed up in the showroom for an entire day. Kristina remembers drawing in a room in which everything shook because of the looms running in the factory underneath. Eventually, they came up with what became our Star bedspread

"That product went on to become one of our bestsellers, and I think also one of our most copied products," Kristina said. "But ours is an original, a piece with a distinct origin."

The bedspread was originally produced in two colorways, navy and red. We later added the popular colors blue, pink, beige, gray, white and now the limited-edition green.

One of Lexington's favorite design elements besides stripes is the star, which you'll find in different items from this collection. We asked Kristina why she chose the star when designing the bedspread and other popular Lexington products throughout the year.

"Stars were trendy back then, so it was natural to do something with stars," she said. But she did notice something special about the universal symbol.

"The star is something that is always with us in some way and is almost always on trend," she said. She noted that the biggest nations and unions use the same star on their flags.

"Something about the star appeals to people and unites us in some way. We have the starry sky in common. It’s just a positive symbol," she said. "It is interesting that it is used in different parts of the world, and it is the same type of star. You can draw the star in different ways, but this version is the most popular. It’s always upright whichever way you turn it or look at it."

Transform your table into a comfortable gathering space for friends and family with a reproduced, plaid-striped tablecloth — a favorite from our spring 2013 collection. If you're looking to add a conversational piece, opt for our limited-edition mug. Favorite beverages taste even better in this anniversary mug that our customers voted for on Instagram earlier this year. This classic earthenware ceramic features the 25-years logo and flag in blue on the front as well as the production year on the bottom. It's a collectable reminiscent of the classic coffee mugs found in old-time American diners.
