There's no need to hit the snooze button when you have the best nighttime routines. We’ve got nocturnal rituals down to a science, and we’re in a sharing mood. The best bedtime routines, we’ve learned, pay attention to the smallest of details. Here are our tips and tools to help you make great night moves.
STEP 1. START WITH A QUICK HAIR TREATMENT
This is a step you don’t have to do daily, unless your hair loves it. Prep your hair with your favorite serums or pre-poos and massage your scalp to get the blood flowing. This helps with hair growth and helps you unwind. Braid your hair and pour yourself a cup of hot tea to get you in the right mood.
STEP 2. WASH YOUR STRESS AWAY
Sore muscles disturbing your sleep? Studies show a steamy, hot shower with water temperature between 104 and 108.5 ºF (40- 42.5 ºC) will loosen those muscles, wash your stress down the drain and improve sleep quality. Turn that shower into a spa ritual, by wrapping up in buttery soft towel that soaks up the moisture fast and feels heavenly against your skin. Just do it all 1-3 hours before bedtime to fall asleep faster.
STEP 3. PUT IN SLIGHT WORK
Now that your body is warm from your shower it’s time to stretch out the kinks. Yoga or light stretching with deep breathing helps us practice mindfulness, lowers blood pressure due to more efficient blood flow and slows our heart rate. A 2019 study in the Journal of Nursing and Health Sciences suggests that stretching may enhance muscle strength and flexibility and reduce lower back pain. You know what this all means? You’ll be kicking stress in the behind, relieving your body of any discomfort or pain you may be feeling and making way for a state of calm and ease. You’ll be better equipped to fall and stay asleep. The best part is that it will only take you 5-10 minutes.
