As soon as the snow melts and the sun starts peeking out the sky, we reach for our trusted commute companion — the lighter jacket. Although worn for a short period of time, these pieces have been in our closets for as long as we can remember and will remain wardrobe staples for the foreseeable future. But how did they get in our closets to begin with? Here’s the story behind this season’s five styles.

The Quilted Jacket

The term quilt originated in 12th century England, but the technique’s roots go back to the Middle Ages. It was first used for bed covers, but gradually went on to be used in light weight clothing. Quilting refers to any run of stitching, either decoratively or just in a straight run combining at least two layers of fabric. The popular three-dimension look on diamond quilted jackets is achieved by adding a third padding layer between the fabrics.

Lexington's contribution to the world of quilted jackets is our Hunter Jacket which fends off brisk breezes while staying comfortable. However if you prefer to layer on a vest, our Gregory comes in green and blue.

The Richard Jacket

The style, created by a Southern Californian brand, is a combination of the bomber and varsity jacket. Named the Catalina, it has been worn since the ’30s and is a popular jacket widely copied by brands and Ivy leagues. The jacket is characterized by the infamous drop shoulder style and a short, yet comfortable, fit. The Catalina jacket is a favorite among Hollywood stars and has been worn by Paul Newman in “Absence of Malice.”

The Fishtail Parka

It's convenient, it's warm and, of course, it is the invention of the U.S. Army. The fishtail parka was first used in 1950 during the Korean War. The design is usually big as they are created to be worn over battle dress and other layers. Our Lee Parka plays off the spacious design making it perfect for layering and giving every feminine look an edge.

The Raincoat

The first version of the raincoat, sold in 1824, was made from rubberized fabric. The fabric was waterproofed by using rubber dissolved in coal-tar naphtha. Though the fabric was impermeable, the coat was stiff, hot and smelly. In other words, it was uncomfortable. That was however remedied, and the raincoat went on to become a hit and a constant in festivals like Coachella and Glastonbury.

Unlike the early raincoat, our Pierce raincoat is not made from rubberized fabric, which is why it’s an odorless, comfortable and dry coat. It comes in our classic fit in a deep marine blue color.

The Field Jacket

Like most silhouettes in menswear, this mainstream jacket has its rich history and origin from the Army. It was conceived to keep the U.S. Army warm and dry during World War II and later during the Vietnam War. The Field jacket has since become a wardrobe essential for every man as the classic item keeps coming back every spring as a reliable outerwear for the unpredictable in-between weather.

This classic style is given a new look by adding some sophisticated details. Our Glenn Field Jacket, for instance, looks ruggedly refined because of details such as the contrasting cordury collar. If you're looking for a subtler look, then our Hayden Jacket is the one for you. It's sporty, stylish and warm all att once.

Whatever jacket you choose, just make sure it makes your journey to work or beach a warm and stylish one. Our versatile John Traveller Twill Jacket is low-maintnance but of high quality, which gives a casually sophisticated look.
